Cottonwood Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, the 40-bed skilled nursing facility in Durango, Colo., has launched an initiative aimed at guiding prospective long-term care residents through Medicaid’s complicated and sometimes stressful pre-screening process and addressing eligibility requirements. Overseeing Cottonwood’s new Medicaid Pre-Screening Program is Director of Medicaid Services Carol Glover, who provides free virtual and phone consultations to individuals with questions concerning long-term care costs and Medicaid coverage. “It’s important to start the conversation early and explore your Medicaid eligibility before you need to enter a skilled nursing facility,” said Glover. Medicaid is a public health care program, funded primarily by the federal government, run at the state level, and administered by each county office. In Colorado, the program is known as Health First Colorado and it offers financial assistance for long-term care services. To qualify, individuals need to meet the program’s functional and financial eligibility requirements. Understanding Medicaid’s complex rules and regulations can be challenging, which is why Cottonwood offers Glover’s services as a free resource for the community. Potential facility residents have a wide range of information not just to gather but also understand, Glover added. This includes determining income and asset levels, what counts toward these, what types of functional needs are covered for skilled nursing care, and more, she said. To get more information about the facility’s Medicaid eligibility prescreening program, or to talk with Glover, call 970-749-4525 or contact her at carol@centennial-hc.com. “This is a valuable community resource that saves time and makes the application process easier for prospective skilled nursing residents and their families,” said Christy Bradley, administrator of Cottonwood. “It’s crucial to plan ahead and get the facts on Medicaid coverage for your specific needs so you can make the best decisions for your future.”
Cottonwood Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center is hosting its annual “Trunk-or-Treat” on Saturday, October 28, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free community event will be held in the parking lot of the skilled nursing facility at 450 Prospector Ave., Durango, Colo. 81301. Cottonwood staff, many in costume, will decorate their cars and fill their trunks with candy for the trick-or-treaters. In addition to candy, free snacks such as cider, popcorn, and hot dogs will be available for the visiting children and their families. “Events such as these are not only fun but are among our ways of giving back to the community we serve,” said Christy Bradley, administrator of Cottonwood Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. “We look forward to this every year. Seeing local kids in costume is our Halloween treat!" In addition to wearing costumes, children are encouraged to bring shopping bags, pillowcases or pumpkin baskets for the goodies. “Many staff members will also be in costume, demonstrating both their holiday spirit and their pleasure in celebrating together with the community,” said Bradley. “In addition to Trunk-or-Treat, we host a large holiday light display in December, visits with the Easter bunny in the spring, and more. We take pride in supporting the region we serve.” Trunk-or-Treat cars will be creatively decorated for the holiday, and children will be invited to go from trunk to trunk to get their candy. There will be more than half a dozen cars, games and candy givers passing out treats and snacks donated by Cottonwood Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center. “This is both a fun and a safe way for our local kids to enjoy the holiday,” said Bradley. “It meshes perfectly with our commitment to provide genuine hometown care while serving as a vital partner in the community.” Please call 970-828-1414 with questions about the Trunk-or-Treat event. Reservations are not required, and the event will be held rain or shine.
Employees in immediate financial need at River Valley Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center can now get economic help to tide them over during difficult times, courtesy of the facility’s just-created employee assistance fund. The unique fund, which is set up as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, is administered for the skilled nursing facility by a third party, the Emergency Assistance Foundation (EAF). Employees can apply for financial grants – which may range from $500 to $2,500 – to help meet expenses for unforeseen disaster or personal hardship. The applications and awards are handled directly by EAF, without the facility knowing who was awarded grants or their purpose, to maintain strict confidentially. Karen Martinez, RN, NHA, River Valley Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center Administrator, said the facility wanted to create a benefit for its staff that reflects part of its mission – treating employees as family – and can help employees in their times of need. “There are many reasons extra money may be needed, whether to deal with natural disasters, accidents, epidemics, illness, domestic abuse, or a death in the family,” she said. “In this season of giving, River Valley Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center is grateful for our staff and to provide additional means to support their well-being,” Martinez said. “This is another way we fulfill our mission. While our commitment is to provide genuine hometown care while becoming a vital partner in the community, none of that can be accomplished without ensuring the health, safety, and happiness of our valued teammates.”
